Bio

Karl is a professional artist based in Portsmouth, his work is based around people and portraiture. His portrait of Pompey supporter John PFC Westwood was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery and Southampton City Gallery in 2009 as part of the BP Portrait Awards and is featured in the book 500 portraits: BP Portrait Award by Sandy Nairn.

Karl’s current project called We Don’t Need Culture has been over a year in the making. Working with Portsmouth City Council in and around the Somerstown community hub the community based art project aims to re-evaluate the word culture and break away from its elitist connotations through exposing arts practice to people who wouldn’t normally see themselves as ͞cultural͟ in this context, and determine that culture is inclusive to all areas of the community. Through creating an exhibition of oil paintings of local people, currently on show in the hub, encourage engagement with the arts indicating that local community culture and arts culture are as equally valid. Karl has secured funding from Arts Council England to fund the project for another year to continue adding more subjects to the exhibition.
