Portrait Painting with Karl Rudziak

October 3, 2020 @ 10:30 am - October 4, 2020 @ 3:30 pm

Interested in learning how to capture a likeness in portrait painting? Join award-winning artist Karl Rudziak as he resumes his popular workshop programme. To ensure social distancing measures are met, Karl will teach this workshop in the Round Tower to allow more space for social distancing. This workshop is available to a maximum of 6 participants, all painting from a photograph of your choosing. It is imperative that you take the photo, preferably someone you know. No flash!

Karl is praised for his technical expertise and patient manner in teaching, and works with all levels of ability. His work resides in private and public hands as part of Portsmouth city art collection and has been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the National Gallery of Scotland.

Subject Matter

The workshop will include the technical side of oil painting that will involve colour mixing, exploring form and colour theory. It is a figurative workshop introducing and exploring natural and expressive colours with the aim to achieve a finished or near finished painting, exploring how oil paints works, guiding you to develop a personal style and explore new approaches.

This is not an atelier workshop but Karl will be referencing historical methods. While the main concentration is painting, some drawing will be necessary for using a grid system to aid proportions.

The workshop will aim at creating a likeness and capture a sense of the sitter in the painting – this is why Karl advises that participants should have a personal interaction with their chosen subject. Workshops are spread over two days, with flexible breaks as needed, as well as a 30 minute lunch break. The Canteen cafe is available on site to buy hot drinks and delicious lunches from.

Day One

Day one is an introduction and general overview to portrait painting. The group will start by creating a monochrome under-painting to explore form through shade and tonal values.

In day two, Karl will teach how to add colour, including how colour theory can help you develop your painting by looking at primary and tertiary colours.
