Shibori and Indigo Course: Module 1
February 16, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm£250
This comprehensive course consists of nine full day sessions (Saturdays 10am to 5pm) from February to November 2019.*
The course will give you a solid foundation in the Japanese stitch resist of Shibori. Each session starts with the introduction of a new technique and some variations based on that technique. You will also learn about working with natural indigo, how to set up and maintain your own vat. Part of the afternoon will be spent at the vats dyeing the previous session’s work. There will be homework to complete between each session.
The first module introduces a number of basic shibori stitches and how to use and combine these to create repeat patterns. We will look at the various stages of design – from initial layout, the creation of stencils and the various methods of transferring stencil patterns onto fabric – to the flow of thread when stitching more complex patterns.
In module two we will look at binding, capping and white shadow (shirokage) and other ways of binding around a core.
In module three we will look at Arashi shibori, Katano shibori and the introduction of different colours using natural dyes other than indigo.
Session 1 Saturday 16th February 2019
Session 2 Saturday 16th March 2019
Session 3 Saturday 13th April 2019
Cost: £250 per module, payable at the start of each module, all materials included.
