Learn how to paint in oils in this practical short course consisting of six weekly sessions. You will be guided through the fundamental techniques and principles of oil painting, allowing you to explore and develop your own unique style. Whether your ultimate goal is to paint portraits, still lives or landscapes or you simply want to try a new medium – this comprehensive course is designed to kick start your oil painting practice and give you the skills and the confidence to start painting on your own.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and intermediate levels alike, although some experience of drawing and/or painting would make a good foundation. Students can expect to produce a number of small oil paintings in a friendly and supportive teaching environment.  Join us to unlock the potential of your creativity and get addicted to the joy of painting in this historic and versatile medium.

What we will cover:

* how to create an accurate drawing

* the importance of value (light and dark) in painting and how to assess it

* how to create an create underpainting

* a guide to materials: solvents, medium, surfaces, which brushes to use and when

* colour theory, colour mixing, temperature and the value of a limited palette

* mark making, edges and paint application

*  the ‘Golden Rules’ of painting  and how to think like a painter
