Explore the expressive potential of portraiture in this rich and playful five-week course, working with both charcoal and soft pastel on toned paper.
We’ll begin with classic techniques — drawing in charcoal with white chalk highlights to create depth, atmosphere and form. You’ll also be introduced to the trois crayons method, a beautiful traditional drawing approach that uses just three tones (typically black, red, and white) to model the figure with warmth, subtlety and clarity. As the course progresses, we’ll delve into the versatility of soft pastels, experimenting with both naturalistic and imaginative, non-literal colour palettes.

Expect a mix of quick, expressive studies and more sustained, considered portraits, all within a supportive, exploratory environment.Alongside these material explorations, we’ll revisit the essential foundations of portraiture, including:proportionsthe planes of the headkey aspects of anatomy helping to strengthen your understanding and build confidence in your drawing. This is a course about learning through doing — from bite-sized sketches to more ambitious pieces, you'll grow your skills in tone, colour and mark-making, while developing your own personal approach to portraiture.

Perfect for artists looking to sharpen their drawing skills, loosen up their technique, or explore the portrait in fresh and creative ways.
