Hotwalls waves goodbye to Rebecca in Studio 10

On the 14th of November, Hotwalls studios waved goodbye to one of their much-loved residents as they moved on from Old Portsmouth.

The wonderfully charismatic Rebecca Thomas Robinson started her residency at Hotwalls Studios in 2020, travelling daily by hovercraft from her home on the Isle of Wight.

During her time in Studio 10, Rebecca has made lifelong friends and has made an astounding impact on us all.

Within her two years in Studio 10, Rebecca continued to develop her personal work, using ordinary, discarded, and found objects; creating hand stitched textile pieces and mixed media paintings. She explained that she ‘found the solitude of enforced lockdown valuable in growing, developing and experimenting with plant-based textiles and beautifully homemade natural botanical inks and dyes’.

Rebecca worked on many personal and group collaborative projects whilst with us; most notably the Arts Council funded ‘Pause, Reflect, Create’. In this project, Rebecca renovated, and hand stitched an heirloom quilt that she entitled ‘Coming back to life’, which is now part of the extensive Arts collection at Portsmouth Museum.

She explained that her highlights included working as Materials Manager for Alice Hume (Studio 9), on her astounding ‘interactive weaves’ ACE project, and more recent- exhibiting at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester.

On her return to her tranquil island studio, Rebecca plans to develop and create work for her forthcoming solo show, which will see her return to the Round Tower in 2023.

Hotwalls Studios would like to wish Rebecca the best of luck (although we don’t think she’ll need it!) in all her endeavours and creative journeys moving forwards.

Guest Artist Programme 2023

For every Open Studios of 2023, we have invited a Guest Artist to use our Round Tower for the day, as their own studio.

This fantastic opportunity allows us to give upcoming or developed artists the chance to work in a grade 1 listed building, associate themselves with the excellent cultural sector of Portsmouth and surround themselves with Hotwalls Studios finest artists!

The first Artist we have invited to the Guest Artist Programme is Harrison Jones.

Harrison is a third year Fine Art student studying at Winchester School of Art and his work never fails to impress. His movement within paint leads to his pieces being so mesmerising that you are captured by the pure beauty of his expressive nature.

With enough work in his portfolio to give developed artists a run for their money, Harrison produces work way beyond his years, and at just 22, has already accumulated quite a few awards under his name.

Harrison explains his work as relying on the sensation and enjoyment to simply create-

‘Stemming from how I feel as an autistic individual, I feel I simply observe the world differently. My brain is wired differently.

The way my mind works leads me to generate work from observation or photos, that capture a moment of myself and what I see- my private space, my imagination, the natural world, plants, leaves, colours, my mind.

My body creates the visuals to my story. My world.

My art communicates my world, with grace and relief, rather than fear and discomfort through speaking.

I am not afraid to push my limits in the studio, I am exploring my world.

Art is my release. Art is my playground. ‘

Harrison will be exhibiting in the Round Tower from 11am – 4pm on Sunday the 15th of January, the Round Tower will be open to the public to come and speak to Harrison and see him work.
